There should be an option to export those SMS sent that failed with the reason into why they failed. At present there is no such option.

I need a way to download the numbers that failed, along with our custom fields we uploaded (for instance, user_id). This OPT OUT list in contacts is nice, because I am able to find all the records that opted out and download our custom fields along with it. Would be good to have something similar for failures.

Is there a single good reason why invalid numbers should not be automatically removed from ALL future sends?
From your view point yes: revenue. You want to keep them in there because we still pay to send to them.
But that is NOT good business practice. Just implement it and stop forcing users to manually download, filter, re-import AND THEN TRANSFER 100 AT A TIME to the opt-out list (because opt out list is inevitably already 20k+ so can't import directly to it).
